Can anyone find list of successes of U.S. Containment during the cold war?

Both sides were armed to the teeth after WWII and with the soviets taking over all the eastern european countries, it was only thru our political/national resolve (and the world's best military didn't hurt either) that the russkies never made a play for western europe. We also kept them out of the middle east by allying with Iran (the Shah), as that would have been their most straight forward land bridge to the oil fields in Saudi, Bahrain, Iraq, and Iran. Reagan's 600 ship Navy and SDI (strategic defense initiative...aka star wars) finally caused them to spend themselves to the point of bankruptcy.
