It sounds like a seafood chowder my Machusetts mother-in-law used to make. It was very ery and creamy. I don't know what herbs she added to it, but it had shrimp, lobster, and cod, along with little chunks of potatoes. I would find a good New England chowder recipe and try it, and see if it comes close to what you had. Or maybe google "Italian fish chowder" and see what comes up!
