Can you use any Electronic Speed Control on an R/C Car?

I have a Traxxas Stampede, it has the original mechanical speed control. I'm looking on ebay for a cheap one, but don't know if I need a certain type. Any help would be appreciated, also how can you make the steering turn sharper?
