Does anyone know what kind of cameras or video recording devices make video look like it was from the 70's ?

I don't know if anyone understands this, but how is it that certain video quality makes me immediately know if video is from the 70's or 80's. For example, I was watching Ferris Bueller and it's obviously from the 80's just because the video looks sort of distorted.
