If Charles Darwin was such a brilliant geneticist, why did he marry his first cousin?

It's funny, because he talked so much about natural selection and mate selection, and how they shape evolution. His work is very valuable, but it seems like his own mate selection was very poor. Darwin even talked about the effects of inbreeding in one of his works.
